What are the advantages of using light-burned magnesia balls?

Light-burned magnesia balls are alkaline refractory products. The calcium oxide (CaO) contained therein can replace CaO in quicklime to maintain the basicity of final steelmaking slag and reduce the addition of quicklime. The CaO in light-burned magnesia balls reacts with silica (SiO₂) in slag to form high-melting-point compounds, namely tricalcium silicate (, C₃S) and dicalcium silicate (, C₂S). When the slag contains sufficient CaO, magnesia (MgO) becomes the principal component of light-burned magnesia balls.
